project name: “CHILDHOOD”

when children in the west are learning how to spell, to count and the different colors of the sky - the children of gaza are learning the meaning of a completely different set of words and experiences, the meaning of feelings no child should know. as their little hairs turn gray before even hitting puberty, these children are growing up in unimaginable terror.

the inspiration:
kate greenaway’s alphabet book is a 150 year old learning tool, a small book showing simple alphabet letters with children playing on and around them in their innocence and curiosity - things that symbolise a child, a childhood.

the project:
what happens if we take this book, this symbol of innocence, and place it within the lives of the children of gaza, what words are they learning? what feelings are they experiencing? what words shape a childhood in gaza?

the typography:
for the letters i have used garamond, an english font used to serve as a reminder of the western presence at fault. garamond is often used in children's books, and for the children of gaza, this western presence is there to crush their dreams instead of nurturing them.

the illustrations:
carefully crafted with the help of an ai tool as i am not an illustrator and did not have the funding to hire one.

this project also serves as a reminder that all education is lost in gaza. all schools have been bombed by israel. the learning process for a child in gaza is nothing but terror. what makes the world think that this is what these children deserve?
